    Why facilities put Keiser next to DFX

    Keiser is internationally known as a supplier of pneumatic gym equipment and holds a strong position in functional training and performance. The reason to look further is rarely dissatisfaction with the machine itself, but almost always the same technical point: the number of training modes a single station can run.

    The technical reason

    • One resistance principle: Keiser applies pneumatic resistance across the full range of motion. Eccentric overloading, isokinetic work or end release requires a different principle.
    • Six modes on one station: anyone serving several user groups from a fixed number of stations covers six training modes on the same square metre with the T232.
    • Open data platform: Keiser offers an A400 touchscreen and an app line of its own. DFX puts PAMFA and the DFX Smart Gym App next to it: open and modular, without a mandatory software subscription, with export to xlsx.
    • Compressed-air infrastructure: a pneumatic machine needs compressed air. That is no objection — DFX supplies pneumatic resistance itself, with five pneumatic strength machines — but it is a facility decision that has to be planned in advance.

    When Keiser does make sense

    Keiser is a good choice for facilities that deliberately want constant pneumatic resistance with low impact loading, for anyone who needs a light and compact machine, and for anyone who wants to load higher than 32 kg per arm or lower than 0.5 kg. Those three situations are set out further down this page.

    What is Keiser?

    Keiser is an American company founded in 1978, specialising in pneumatic gym equipment. It is known for using air pressure as its resistance mechanism, which allows a smooth and explosive movement without the inertia of weights.

    DFX as an alternative to Keiser

    The DFX Servo Trainer T232 runs six software-controlled training modes on one machine and measures every repetition. The machine carries the name ELIGA — the technology partner with which DFX produces its digital resistance line. Delivery, installation, service, warranty and the single point of contact all sit with DFX in Huizen, the Netherlands.

    Core differences

    • Six resistance modes against one: isotonic, eccentric, isokinetic, end release, elastic force and fluid resistance, selectable on the 12-inch touchscreen.
    • Measurement per repetition: ten measured values at 2000 Hz, with a force curve per set and comparison against earlier sessions.

    Warranty, stated neutrally

    Warranty is not an axis on which either brand plainly wins; the schedules are structured differently. Keiser gives ten years on the frame, three years on cylinders, displays, processor boxes and thumb switches (one year on compressors without a drying mechanism), two years on compressors, dryers, cables, pulleys and bearings, one year on chrome, ninety days on paint, upholstery, belts, grips and rubber and plastic parts, and three years on M-Series cardio excluding labour and consumables. Labour is generally not covered by Keiser.

    DFX gives four years on equipment and three years on free weights. A per-component schedule is not publicly stated by DFX. On the frame, Keiser therefore gives a longer term than DFX.

    The price of six modes

    Six software-controlled training modes give more coverage per station, but they also bring more software dependency and a steeper learning curve for staff. The team has to know the modes and be able to assign them to the right user group; otherwise the machine ends up sitting in one mode in daily practice.

    Anyone who wants to run a training floor without software guidance is better served by a single principle. Anyone who has to serve several user groups from a fixed number of stations gains from the larger number of modes.

    DFX and Keiser, product by product

    The direct counterpart.     Anyone who wants jump and force measurements alongside the cable work uses a force platform. Those measurements end up in the same data line as those of the T232.

    Velocity-based training → DFX VBT System

    For velocity-based training with free weights, so that barbell work and cable work are judged on the same measured values.

    When Keiser is the better choice

    There are three situations in which the Keiser Functional Trainer demonstrably fits better than the DFX Servo Trainer T232. Anyone who recognises one of these three is better off buying Keiser.

    1. Training explosively on pneumatic resistance only, with no need for data

    Keiser describes the system as constant pneumatic resistance that reduces impact loading. For a floor that only wants to offer that one training mode, without measurements, force curves or export, a servo-controlled platform with six modes is needless complexity.     2. Needing a light and compact machine

    The Keiser Functional Trainer weighs 59 kg floor-mounted (136 kg with its base) and has a base depth of 1219 mm. The DFX Servo Trainer T232 weighs 270 kg and measures 2046 mm in depth.     3. Needing a higher absolute resistance or a lower starting resistance

    Keiser goes up to 48 kg bilaterally and 24 kg unilaterally, and starts from 0.1 kg in increments of 100 grams. The T232 delivers 0.5 to 32 kg per arm in increments of 0.1 kg. Anyone who has to load heavier than 32 kg per arm, or who wants to start lower than 0.5 kg — in early-stage rehabilitation, for instance — should choose Keiser.     Other types of alternative

    DFX is not the only route away from a Keiser set-up. Depending on what exactly you are looking for, three other directions are worth serious consideration.

    A second pneumatic supplier

    Anyone who wants to keep the pneumatic principle but not be tied to a single brand can place a pneumatic machine from a second supplier next to the existing one. With five pneumatic, isotonic strength machines DFX supplies that line itself, so that route also runs through us.

    Mechanical cable stations

    For floors where the cable station mainly has to handle volume and does not need to produce data, a classic cable station with a weight stack is the sober choice. Fewer functions, less to go wrong, lower maintenance load.

    Separate measurement equipment alongside existing machines

    Anyone who wants to keep the existing machines but is missing measurements can add measurement instead of replacing equipment: a force platform for jump and force testing and velocity measurement on free weights deliver data without rebuilding the floor.
